The Fighting Cocks – pub in Moseley – coat of arms above door
Arm

Coat of arms above the entrance door to the pub.

This is one of the pubs mentioned in my new book Victorian Buildings of Birmingham by Roy Thornton.

The only pub I captured in Moseley (there are others, but I may do those another time perhaps).

It is called The Fighting Cocks, it was built in 1899 (according to the book – Heritage Gateway says 1903) and is a Grade II listed building. One of the best known designed outside the City Centre by Newton & Cheatle.

It is on the corner of St Mary’s Row and King Edward Road.

1903 by T W F Newton and Cheatle. At a tangeht to Alcester Road on corner
with King Edward Road. A large public house of 2 and 3 storeys ashlar faced
to King Edward Road and with ashlar ground floor and red brick upper floors
with stone dressings to St Mary’s Row. Lofty octagonal ashlar corner tower
with bell stage louvres alternating with clock faces to top stage, surmounted
by ogee swept lead cupola-dome. Simplified Jacobean mullion transom fenestration
with Arts and Crafts details. Shaped Dutch gables to St Mary’s Row. Leaded
light casements, with panes of stained glass to bar windows. Deep semi-circular
hoods to doorways supported on consoles, that to corner tower with pilasters
flanking doorway and painted relief coat of arms with name above in good gilded
Arts and Crafts lettering. Clock faces have scrolled surrounds of strapwork
derivation with small swept gables above breaking the capping cornice of the
tower. Interior altered but retains good Arts and Crafts bar back and double
faced clock supported by fighting cock all in fine quality wrought iron work.

By coincidence (or design?), this photo was taken shorty after Edmund Resch, the owner of Resch’s Waverley Brewery, died on 22 May 1923.

This is Day Street, where part of the Western Distributor now is, showing the rear of the "Exchange" Coffee Palace (left) and the rear of the Bristol Arms Hotel on Sussex Street.

I’m really excited to see these images of the Bristol Arms, I hadn’t seen them before. They knocked down the Day Street half of it when they built the expressway I think. But the front is still there – it’s a bar called the Bristol Arms Retro Hotel today: http://www.theretro.com.au/

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/pellethepoet] Thanks for your research, we have amended the caption. Odd really that this image arrived to us titled "Reschs Waverley Sparkling Ales shop".

[http://www.flickr.com/photos/agrippinamaior] Thanks for adding the link to the modern day bar of this old pub.

I wonder if this could be some sort of before-and-after diptych.
